A bronze life-size statue of Johnny O'Leary, (1923-2004), one of Irelands most famous accordion players, was unveiled in Killarney Town Centre, Co. Kerry, on April 28, 2007.

Johnny O'Leary was famous for playing his distinctive style of Sliabh Luachra music and for bringing the rich Sliabh Luachra tradition to a much wider audience.

He played his music from the heart - with great energy and distinction. A kind and gentle man of great character - and many talents, remembered with deep affection. He touched the hearts of all who ever met him or who heard him play. He loved to tell stories too.

Born in Gneeveguilla on the Kerry side of the Cork/Kerry border, not far from Knocknagree ( and Dan O'Connell's Pub) which may be said to be the centre of Sliabh Luachra, Johnny lived and worked in Rathmore, Co. Kerry.

Killarney's Mayor, Ms.Sheila Casey, speaking on behalf of Killarney Town Council and the people of Killarney, stated that the statue was a fitting tribute to such a fine musician.

Archdeacon Michael Murphy, who performed the blessing of the statue, went to school with Johnny O'Leary and recounted some great stories of their younger days.

Seanie O'Leary who spoke on behalf of the family said that Johnny would have been delighted to see the piece in Killarney town - as it was in Clancy's shop that Johnny bought his first accordion.

Other members of the O'Leary family present included Johnny's widow, Lil O'Leary, Maureen and Eileen O'Leary - and grandsons, Daniel and Brian O'Leary, both of whom played their accordions at the ceremony. Johnny's and the Sliabh Luachra tradition will most certainly continue.

Many musicians and friends of Johnny O'Leary also attended the unveiling.

The statue which was created by Michael Kenny of Castleisland captures the energy and spirit of this wonderful man and his music.
